Meet Harimohan Singh Aithani- The magical mathematician of India!
Dodging the roadblocks successfully and reaching your destination is one of the most satisfying things. Everyone loves being given attention after they do something big and good. Harimohan Singh Aithani did some hugely unique things and became a national and world record holder in making difficult magic squares. What made him sad were not the difficulties he faced but the ignorance he received from the media and from the people that too after making India proud.
“It is always the simple that produces the marvelous.” —Amelia Barr
Setbacks to begin
Born in a small town of Uttarakhand, Aithani’s life did not start on a positive note as his mother passed away when he was just one year old. Now the onus of bringing him up, along with his two brothers and a sister, was on his father who was a teacher. Life picked up after this early setback, but it was just a matter of some years when he lost one of his brothers as well.
“Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human spirit.” —E. E. Cummings
The journey ahead
Aithani’s family was not well off, and that meant he had to do things, more or less, on his own. He did his schooling and completed his graduation. His father became his inspiration as he embarked on his journey to become a teacher. Until here, things were quite normal, and his life was just like that of any other man of his age. But there was always this urge of doing something different, something that was not mediocre, something that could make him popular.
The hidden talent
“In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” —Mahatma Gandhi
At times, we do not realize the value of what we possess. Aithani had an amazing talent hidden in him, and that was the game of numbers in which he was a master. He never realized the importance of being in love with mathematics since childhood. Aithani loved to be challenged in this subject; he was quick to solve mathematical problems posed in front of him by someone else. Never did he realize that the thing he had made normal was actually very special.
Creating magic with squares
“All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination.” —Earl Nightingale
He always wanted to be popular because of his talent and achievements, and now he was aware of his talent. In Feb 2009 he started writing magic squares and the next few months were all about working day in and day out just to produce the best results. His desires reduced his sleeping time to just one hour; it was all about working and working hard. Aithani finally finished his first magic squares in April 2009. Now he had the beginning; the next thing was improvement towards which he started working. The results were there to see when he could write the smallest magic square in just 7 seconds. In 1260 hours, he wrote 48000 magic squares on nearly 450 chart papers. In 2014, Limca Book of Records recognized this and marked it as a National Record in the book. In 2015, he was announced as the world record holder by Limca Books.
The challenges in his journey
A backward area with no proper communication facilities, it was difficult for him to let people know about his talent and achievements. He believes that electronic media never supported or promoted him in the way which Print media did. With such considerable achievements in his bag, he was hardly recognized by people and media.
“It is not the mountain. We conquer ourselves.”- Edmund Hillary
The theory he solved
Despite the challenges that he faced, he didn't let his determination go weak. An internationally unsolved mathematical theory and an Indian small-town boy- no one could even think of the boy winning, but he did. Aithani solved one of the oldest mathematical theories, the Beal Conjecture theory, and became the only person to do that all alone. What is more fascinating is that he didn’t use any calculating device to do this. An international journal recently published his Mathematical journal and one of the organization has proposed 1 million dollar for the solution. Many other math problems are there that he wants to solve. He has even discovered short formulas for the longer ones to make them easily understandable to students. It has all been possible because of his self-study. Till now, Harimohan has won numerous awards for his talent including the Teacher honor Award and Talent Honor Award in 2015 and 2016 respectively.
”Victory is also in the quality of the competition and just in the final score.”- Mike Marshall
Harimohan is a complete package of talent, dedication, hard work, determination, perseverance, self-confidence, and will power. Never forget to give due credit to his family, he has become such a big inspiration for others. He wants to inspire the youth of the country, who have started fearing math, to cherish the subject and make it a part of their life. He wants to become the brand ambassador in this field, and why not? Who better than him to make youngsters aware of the subject? All this is only possible if he is given true coverage and his story is shared maximum. He wants the youth to realize the beauty of math. He regrets that the current generation does not realize the contribution of Indians in solving major mathematical problems of the world. Currently, he is known only in the record books and not in households, and this is what needed to be improved, so share his story and make him popular.
