“Problems are not stop signs, they are guidelines.” – Robert H. Schuller
The problems are common and yet you can’t escape them as they are going to come to you anyhow. After shifting to Mumbai, Sanjay’s life was not easy at all. The industry was not ready to accept him either as a hero, or villain, or a comedian. The period between 1991 and 1999 saw him trying his hand at everything such as lighting, art, direction and even photography to earn some money but he was forced to live on vada pav due to the shortage of money. During this period he also worked in one television series ‘Chanakya’(1991) and his first movie, O Darling Yeh Hai India (1995). However, none of them helps him to get the name he wanted to make in the industry.
He insists that his struggle period was, however the learning phase all the time. At last, his struggles reaped the fruits and he featured in the Apple Singh commercials for ESPN Star Sports during cricket world cup series in 1999. It was so popular that character was adopted as the channel’s face. After this, his work in television series ‘Office Office’ got him the well-deserved recognition for the role of Shukla. Since then, he has worked in many awards winning films such as ‘Masaan’ and ‘Ankhon Dekhi’. Apart from these, there has been a lot of films starring him in supporting or cameo role.
Sanjay himself said that the worst time of his life was when he was critically ill during the shooting of the Office Office movie in Patna. His stomach was paining and after hospitalization, Drs. removed 15 liters of pus from his stomach. This made his father very worried about him and worst happened soon. Sanjay’s father passed away after 15 days of his recovery from the illness. This was a great shock for him as he was very close to his father. He went into deep depression.
In an interview, he told at that time that ‘’I could not go back to Mumbai. I wanted to be alone, so I went to Rishikesh and started working in a dhaba, making omelets. The Sardar who owned the dhaba did not recognize me. But customers would see me and ask, “Golmaal mein aap hi the na (Weren’t you in Golmaal)?”. After few days, Sardar asked him about his identity when someone told him that he is an actor.

When he was working at the Dhaba, there were no further plans as he was in deep depression. At that point in time, Rohit Shetty persuaded him to work in his movie, ‘All the best’. The character ‘RGV’ played by him became famous soon and so he gets the deserved comeback as well. After this, it was the Sanjay’s show everywhere. This was his second inning and he worked in many supporting roles after ‘ALL THE BEST’. Some of the notable movies are Zameen, Charas, Plan, Satya, Bunti aur Babli, Bhoothnath Returns, Kick and Dum Laga Ke Haisha.
