“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trial.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
The Chennai based entrepreneur, Sriram Gopal is trying to change the style of farming in urban areas using hydroponics, a method for farming without soil. Sriram is also the founder of an IT firm Synamen which he founded in 2007. He left his position as CEO and took the risk of starting the hydroponic based company Future Farms in 2015.
Sriram completed his graduation from the Prestigious Hindustan University in Electronics and Communication and did his Master’s in Business Administration(MBA) from Caledonian Business School, UK. His father, Gopalakrishnan used to run a company which manufactures photo processing and printing machines and is the 1st of its kind in the country.
The machines produced by their company are way cheaper than those sold by Big Companies like Kodak and Fuji those days without compromising on quality. His father also owned a chain of color photo labs which made Sriram interested in repairing high-end cameras. He even wanted to start a camera repair shop in Chennai after his graduation.
The days he spent at his father’s company, the struggles his father faced and his own experience made him learn him a lot of business lessons. He learned a lot of stuff which made him follow the philosophy that“You should be in tomorrow’s business and not today’s business and if it’s good enough the big guys will take over. If it’s not(good enough), you will stagnate.”
“If there’s even a slight chance of getting something that will make you happy, risk it. Life is too short, and happiness is too rare.” – A.R.Lucas
After a short period of time, he started examining and experimenting hydroponic farming at his father’s factory which was closed because of his health issues. He then became the distributor of hydroponic kits in the country building his connections with some like-minded people.
Sriram then started the Future Farms with 11 other people each from different fields. Together they invested 2.5 crores which today has been running successfully serving clients making technogardens at homes and offices working with the Horticulture Department of Tamil Nadu.
Sriram’s story is a perfect replica of successful entrepreneurs whose success lies in the willingness to take risks. He is an inspiration to all the youngsters who are passionate, innovative but are afraid of taking risks in their life. Never forget that life is all about taking risks and if you never take a risk, you will never achieve your dreams.
“I am not where I am because of luck. I am where I am because I took risks others weren’t willing to take. The world rewards the risk-takers. It always has. It always will.” – Dan Pearce
