The King of Indian Football makes it to the list of the active goal scorers of the world:
“Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failures, loyalty, and persistence” – Colin Powel
Known as the “Goal Machine”, Indian striker Sunil Chhetri recently ranked 4th for scoring the highest number of goals in the world! With a record of 54 goals in 94 appearances, Sunil eventually set a benchmark as the finest footballer from India. Being the current captain of our National team, he also plays for Indian club Bengaluru FC.
Born on 3rd August 1984 to K.B Chhetri and Sushila Chhetri in Sunderabad, Andhra Pradesh, Sunil started the game in his young age by participating in various tournaments. After joining Mohun Bagan in 2002, he took a grip on his career with JCT when he scored21 goals in 48 matches.
Although he was linked with numerous football clubs throughout his career, it was the Indian National Team that provided fame to the young footballer. With Sunil in the team, India won the 2007 Nehru Cup, 2009 Nehru Cup, 2012 Nehru Cup, 2011 SAFF Championship and so on. He was one of the best players in 2008 AFC Challenge Cup that India won and qualified for their 1st AFC Asian Cup in 27 years.
Sunil Chhetri started his professional career with Mohun Bagan of the National Football League after playing with City FC of New Delhi. Although next, he joined JCT for the 2005-06 seasons, he always stated his desire to move abroad. Once he said, “Of course, I would love to play in Europe like David Villa and it all depends on where I get an offer from. England would certainly be fine and I have had talks but the stumbling blocks are the work permit restrictions.”
Chhetri signed with the fellow I-League side East Bengal in 2008-09season. Since then he scored several matches winning crucial goals for the team.
After completing the contract, he signed a two-year contract with another I-League side, Dempoon May 22, 2009. Next, he joined Kansas City Wizards on Major League Soccer in 2004, where he became the third Indian to play outside of South Asia and the first Indian to play in MLS.
Again after returning to Mohun Bagan in 2011, Sunil signed a two-year contract with Sporting Clube de Portugal on July 4, 2012. On 19 July 2013, he signed with a direct entry I-League side Bengaluru FC. He made his debut for the club in their opening game against Mohun Bagan where the team managed a 1-1 draw.
In 2015, Chhetri was picked up by Mumbai City for Indian Super League for 1.2 crores, making him the most expensive Indian player at the auctions. After that contract got over, Sunil Chhetri recently is playing under Bengaluru FC, along with our national team.
His international career began in 2004 when he played his first game for the Indian U-20 team in the 1-0 victory over Pakistan. Some of his international successes include the matches won in Nehru Cup 2007, 2009, 2012, 2011 SAFF Championship, 2008 AFC Challenge Cup.
Sunil Chhetrirecently overtakes Wayne Roony and lands at the 4th position in the top goal scorer’s list after Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. His success story tells us never to quit, but to follow our dreams with passion, courage, hard work and dedication.
